Storm Brewing
Caldey Island

Caldey Island is one of my favourite places to visit in Wales. From a young age, I have visited Caldey Island on numerous occasions and it still throws so many surprises every time you visit. Throughout the summer season, day-visitors experience a calming influence, tranquility and peace when visiting one of Britain’s most holy islands.

Last year, I captured this view of the island from a pleasure boat and depicts the island from a very different angle with the popular resort of Tenby in the distance. The mood of the painting captures a heavy storm looming over the coastline and making its way towards the island. The overall atmosphere is enhanced with the way the light accentuates the island set against the ambience of the sky and the tense mood of the sea.

Painting with a palette knife is an effective way to create a texture that allows for greater depth and intensity to a painting. This is a technique I simply enjoy as it presents a mode of expression that keeps evolving.
